What a lovely article! I particularly like your description of the tomatoes' sunrise. And I didn't realize that you have actually met the farmers whose CSA food you buy.

My mother grew up canning in the South, but she never did while we were growing up. She must have had the reaction you did. I learned to can from a woman in my Mormon ward when I was in my 20s. The first thing we canned was nectarines (why, I don't know, but they were beautiful in the jars).
